In an interview with EnergyChannel at Intersolar South America 2026, EENOVANCE Vice President John Long says Brazil’s energy storage market is still at an early stage as the company expands from residential batteries to C&I and utility-scale solutions — with energy management systems and artificial intelligence becoming part of its long-term strategy.

Brazil’s energy storage market may still be in its early stages, but manufacturers are already positioning themselves for what could become the next major transformation in the country’s power sector.


For EENOVANCE, the opportunity goes beyond selling more batteries.

The company is working toward a broader energy ecosystem that combines batteries, power electronics, inverters, energy management systems and, increasingly, artificial intelligence to help customers control how and when electricity is stored and used.

That strategy was outlined by John Long, Vice President of EENOVANCE, in an interview with EnergyChannel during Intersolar South America 2026 in São Paulo.


According to Long, EENOVANCE has been studying the Brazilian market for roughly three years, initially focusing on testing, learning and understanding local conditions. Since the second half of 2024, the company has moved toward a more structured strategy for the country.

“Now we have a very good opportunity to explore,” Long said.

But expanding in Brazil, he argues, will require more than technology.

EENOVANCE is looking to strengthen its local team, technical services and partnerships as it prepares for broader adoption of energy storage.

For a technology expected to operate for years and depend on monitoring, maintenance and software, local support becomes a critical part of the business model.


From Residential Batteries to Utility-Scale Storage

EENOVANCE began with residential energy storage but has expanded its portfolio into the commercial and industrial — C&I — market and larger utility-scale projects.

That evolution is also changing how the company defines its business.

Rather than focusing solely on battery cabinets, EENOVANCE wants to provide increasingly integrated energy systems.

In the C&I segment, Long says the company already works with all-in-one systems combining batteries, PCS and EMS within a single architecture. It is also developing configurations that pair battery cabinets with hybrid inverters.

At utility scale, the strategy shifts toward large battery containers integrated with PCS, transformers, switchgear and other equipment required to build complete storage systems.

“We don’t want to work only with cabinets. We want to work more and more with system solutions,” Long said.

The shift reflects a broader change across the storage industry: the battery itself is becoming only one part of the product.


The Next Layer: Energy Management and AI

One of EENOVANCE’s key technology bets is the EMS, or Energy Management System.

An EMS acts as the control layer of an energy storage system, determining when batteries should charge, discharge or preserve energy based on variables such as electricity consumption, solar generation, battery status and grid conditions.

Artificial intelligence could make those decisions increasingly sophisticated.

In markets with dynamic electricity pricing, for example, software can identify lower-cost periods to charge a battery and higher-price periods when stored energy becomes more valuable. Algorithms can also incorporate forecasts for electricity demand and photovoltaic generation.


Long says EENOVANCE is investing in power electronics, inverters and AI-related capabilities as part of this broader strategy.

But he also makes an important distinction: technology must ultimately create measurable economic value.


For customers, AI only matters if it can help reduce costs, improve system returns or optimize the use of available energy.

And Brazil, Long says, may first need to develop more fundamental storage applications before advanced AI-driven optimization becomes widespread.

In the near term, some of the clearest opportunities include backup power, solar-plus-storage, electricity cost reduction and greater energy security for homes, businesses and industrial facilities.


The Economics Will Determine How Fast Brazil Moves

The speed of Brazil’s storage expansion will ultimately depend on economics.

Long says battery payback varies significantly according to electricity prices, location, consumption profiles and system configuration.

In some international residential markets, returns can approach five years, according to references discussed during the interview. In Brazilian scenarios evaluated by the company, Long cited potential payback periods of approximately five to eight years, depending on the project.

There is no universal number.

Each installation requires its own financial analysis.

But Long believes storage becomes significantly more attractive when the investment approaches a five-year return.

“If the return is five years, I would say this is the moment,” he said.

The comparison with solar is difficult to ignore.

Photovoltaics also spent years being viewed primarily as an expensive emerging technology. As equipment costs fell and the market matured, the conversation shifted toward economics and the savings solar could generate over time.

Energy storage is now beginning a similar transition.

For commercial and industrial customers, the economics can become particularly compelling because the same battery can potentially serve several purposes: providing backup power, managing demand, reducing electricity costs and improving the use of existing photovoltaic generation.

That ability to stack different applications within the same asset could become an important part of the business case for BESS in Brazil.


Brazil’s Storage Market Is Just Getting Started

Despite rapid global growth, Long sees Brazil as being at the beginning of its energy storage journey.

That is precisely why EENOVANCE wants to build its local structure before demand accelerates.

The company’s strategy is to have products, services, technical teams and local partners ready as the market scales.

“We need reliable, high-level partners working together with our local team,” Long said.

EENOVANCE is a relatively young company, but Long says its team includes professionals with more than 14 years of experience in the energy sector.

Its ambition in Brazil now spans the entire storage spectrum — from residential systems to C&I applications and large-scale projects.

More importantly, the company is seeking to evolve from a battery manufacturer into a provider of integrated energy systems.

The message coming from EENOVANCE at Intersolar 2026 reflects a broader shift taking place across the energy storage industry.

The next phase of competition will not be determined by battery capacity alone.

It will increasingly be about who can control energy most effectively.

A standalone battery can store electricity.

Connect it to solar generation, inverters, meters and an EMS, and it becomes part of a broader energy system.


Add software and artificial intelligence, and that system can increasingly determine when energy should be stored, consumed or preserved.

Solar gave consumers the ability to generate their own electricity.

Storage adds another strategic variable: time.

Electricity generated now can be used later. Energy can be stored when it is abundant or inexpensive and discharged when it becomes more valuable.

That changes the economics of electricity.

And it means the future storage market may not be won simply by whoever sells the cheapest battery.


It may be won by companies that can demonstrate that their systems solve real problems:

reducing electricity costs, preventing outages, improving solar utilization, managing demand and increasing energy security.

That is the market EENOVANCE is preparing to compete in Brazil.

From residential systems to utility-scale projects, the battery remains at the heart of energy storage. But increasingly, software will decide how that heart works.
